Common Public Pool Accidents

With warmer weather approaching, the use of swimming pools will become a popular occurrence. This means more individuals visiting public pools. This means it’s important to understand the potential dangers that may exist in these pools to better protect yourself and your loved ones from harm.

Unfortunately, swimming pool accidents do happen and when they do, the injured party may be able to take legal action against the responsible party depending on a number of factors. Here are some of the common public swimming pool accidents that can happen and what else you should know.

Near Drowning and Drowning Accidents

These types of accidents occur far too often and even impact children under the age of 14. Typically, these may occur when the public pool does not have a lifeguard on duty or in a situation where the individual suffers another injury from a previous accident such as hitting the bottom of the pool with their head.

Slip and Falls

The area around the pool can get very slippery as more water accumulates around the edges. Unfortunately, not everyone sees this danger or there are no signs warning individuals to not run. This often leads to serious injury and may be prevented with non-slip surfaces surrounding the pool.

Diving Board Accidents

Diving boards are common at public pools, but unfortunately, they may not be the safest when it comes to protecting someone from injury. Diving boards can break or send an individual too high into the air. It can also be slippery, causing the patron to slip and fall.

Broken Drains

If you’ve ever gone to the site of the pool, you know that there are covers to some drain areas that are supposed to prevent someone from stepping into it. Unfortunately, these covers are often flimsy and can break relatively easily, leaving someone with a serious injury as a result.

Whether the injury was caused by slippery decks, lack of supervision, lack of barriers, or any other form of neglect on behalf of the property owner, the injured party may be able to seek compensation for the damages they sustained.
