What Is an Uneven Cargo Load In a Trucking Accident?

Because there are a large number of trucks on the road, there is always the potential for a serious crash to occur. They are caused by a number of different issues, many of which are errors on behalf of either the truck driver or other drivers on the road.

One way in which the trucking company, truck driver, or other employee can be held liable is if the cargo load is uneven. Not many people understand what this means or how it causes an accident. Our New York truck accident lawyers explain.

How Uneven Cargo Loads Happen

Prior to leaving the warehouse on its destination, a truck is loaded by the workers and inspected by the driver and others. One thing that they must check for is the overall weight of the truck with the cargo and the way in which the items are loaded inside the trailer.

Uneven truck loads for large containers may mean that one side of the trailer is heavier than the others. So the cargo may be loaded too heavy to the front or back, or to the sides of the truck making it more difficult to control on steep hills or sharp turns.

For a truck carrying fuel or gravel, if one of the tankers is filled more than the other, it can cause a discrepancy in the weight and control. As a result, sharp turns can cause the heavier cargo to tilt more, pulling the lighter haul with it and forcing the truck to turn over.

Typically, uneven cargo loads occur because of an oversight on the part of the workers in the warehouse, as well as the driver. If the cargo is not properly inspected to ensure it is safe and meets the weight requirements, any accident caused by the uneven truck load can be attributed to the company, driver, or employees.
