Bicycle Safety - and What You Can Do When You're Injured

Fall weather is perfect for afternoon bike rides. However, with everyone rushing home from work, it’s important to take a few extra precautions on-the-road (especially in NYC). Here are a few bicycle safety tips to keep in mind before you head outside.

Bicycle Safety Tips:

  • Use the Bike Lane – If there is a bike lane – take advantage! These lanes are designed to keep bicyclists out of the way of cars and trucks that might otherwise speed past. Of course, always be mindful of other drivers even if you know that you have the right of way.
  • Get a Bell – Add a bell to your bicycle. This is a great way to let pedestrians know that you are in the bike lane!
  • Don’t Wear Headphones – If you want to listen to music, only keep one earbud in. In fact, that’s the law in NYC. You want to make sure that you can hear cars and trucks and people around you.
  • Use Reflectors – Make sure that there are reflectors on your bicycle, especially if you plan on riding at night.
  • Watch for Car Doors – Keep an eye out for cars doors being opened in your path. Always leave plenty of room between yourself and parked cars. You never know when a door is going to be opened.
  • Stay Alert – Always be aware of your surroundings. You never know when an accident can occur.
